Messiaen: Vingt regards

Olivier Messiaen created his epic cycle Vingt Regards sur l’enfant-Jésus during the darkest days of the Second World War. A profound reflection on all aspects of the human condition refracted through the composer’s intense religious faith and profound humanity. The music moves inexorably through vast spaces encompassing the sound of chants, colourful birdsong, joyful dance and ultimately a sense of awe at the wonders of the universe. Experiencing the complete cycle in concert is always a significant musical event. The award-winning Latvian pianist Reinis Zariņš has a great affinity and personal connection to this masterpiece of twentieth century piano music. His performances of Messiaen’s music are always transformative, unmissable occasions.
